The 3DS Has “Sophisticated” Anti-Piracy Measures?

July 12th, 2010 | Category: Uncategorized

With Nintendo going on a tirade against flash carts and piracy on the DS by placing counter-measures in newer hardware like the DSi, it downright logical to assume that the Big N would step up their anti-piracy measures in the upcoming 3DS.

According to THQ Executive Vice President of Global Publishing Ian Curran, while asking Nintendo to explain how their anti-piracy tech worked, the company stated that it was “too sophisticated to explain.”

The full quote from Curran:

“The problem with the DS market in the last few years, particularly with the DS Lite, is that it’s just been attacked by piracy. It’s made it almost impossible to shift any significant volume. The DSi combated it a little bit, but the 3DS has taken that a step further. I actually asked Nintendo to explain the technology and they said it’s very difficult to do so because it’s so sophisticated.”

I seriously doubt the “sophistication” of this technology. Even the most stubborn of measures taken by companies to prevent piracy have only worked out to be minor stalls. Take, for example, Ubisoft’s always-on DRM that requires players to have a steady internet connection to their servers in order to continue playing or suffer being booted back to the main menu without a chance to save. It was circumvented a little over a month after the game came out (not without a bit of drama from the hacker community).

It really sounds like Nintendo is just hiding their hand so as not to give the homebrew/hacker/pirate communities a leg up on developing a workaround.

Video Chatting Coming to Pokémon Black & White

July 12th, 2010 | Category: Uncategorized

New features and minor tweaks are all in the latest Pokémon story in Japanese magazine CoroCoro.

The upcoming Pokémon Black and White will include a new “Live Caster” mode, which allows players to video chat with other players, both locally and online. Naturally, this feature is exclusive to the DSi and 3DS.

According to the article, the mode allows four people to video conference with up to four people locally, and two people over Wi-Fi. Also, the Live Caster feature is limited only to people you have exchanged Friend Codes with. A perfectly understandable restriction, as you don’t want kids getting exposed to the Chatroulette-esque random penis while trying to talk about Bidoofs.

Black and White will also have a Tag Mode, dubbed “Pass by Mode,” which will play some optional part in assisting you on your adventure; however, it was not specified in the magazine.

In addition to the new features, the games will have version exclusive areas: White Forest or Black City.

Lastly, the new three-on-three battles we saw in those gameplay videos from last month will feature front and back line positioning, which will be a factor in determining attack strength and effectiveness.
