Trine 2 Update Will Add Wii U Pro Controller Support

November 30th, 2012 | Category: Uncategorized

FrozenByte, the developers behind the eShop launch title Trine 2, are working on an update due which will add support for the Wii U Pro Controller.

So, why wasn’t it already supported? FrozenByte’s Joel explains,

“The reason for this was pretty simple – we just didn’t have the controller until a week ago, so we couldn’t add support for it, I think Nintendo had to send all their samples to retail games or something.”

It seems odd that they couldn’t get their hands on a Pro Controller earlier, but it won’t matter soon enough. The update should be out mid-December.

Full Circle: Nintendo Power’s Final Cover

November 30th, 2012 | Category: Uncategorized

The folks at Nintendo Power sure know how to go out with style.

For the now-defunct magazine’s final issue, they decided to bring things back to where they started by remaking the cover of their very first issue. Of course, they did update things a little to reflect today’s content, but it’s still an incredibly touching and emotional throwback.

Club Nintendo Platinum Rewards Begin Arriving for Members

November 30th, 2012 | Category: Uncategorized

Club Nintendo members who accumulated enough Coins this past year to reach Platinum status have begun receiving their free set of Mario-themed playing cards.

The standard 52-card deck features Mario, Peach and Luigi as the King, Queen and Jack, respectively. Bowser also appears in the deck as the two Joker cards. The rest of the cards are decorated with other Mario-related imagery like 1-ups, mushrooms and fire flowers.

Club Nintendo always give out such nice presents to their members, but I just can’t help but think about the Super Famicom Classic Controller Japan got a few years back and get a little jealous.

Renown Hacker Reportedly Discovers Wii U Clock Speeds

November 29th, 2012 | Category: Uncategorized

Wii hacker Hector Martin (probably better known as Marcan from Team Twiizers and fail0verflow) has apparently found very specific details regarding the Wii U’s CPU and GPU, including clock speeds.

Nintendo usually avoids releasing such details, so it’s often left up to the public to figure out what’s under the hood of their new hardware.

According to Marcan, the Wii U’s “Espresso” CPU is a three-core PowerPC chip with each core clocking in at exactly 1.243125GHz and the “Latte” GPU is an AMD-based chip that runs at 549.999755MHz.

For comparison, the Wii’s single-core “Broadway” CPU clocked in at 729 MHz and its “Hollywood” GPU clocked in at 243 MHz.

As for the current generation of consoles, the 360’s triple-core Xenon processor runs at approximately 3.2GHz. However, due to the number of hardware threads and the way it is designed, each thread runs at roughly 1.6GHz, meaning in terms of clock speed alone, the differences between the Wii U’s and 360’s processors are almost negligible.

One thing the Wii U CPU has going for it is a more efficient design.

“The Espresso is an out of order design with a much shorter pipeline,” says Marcan. “It should win big on IPC on most code, but it has weak SIMD.”

In the end, Marcan believes that the Wii U CPU isn’t as bad as it’s being made out to be.

“So yes, the Wii U CPU is nothing to write home about, but don’t compare it clock per clock with a 360 and claim it’s much worse. It isn’t.”

Nintendo Confirms Mario Kart 3DS XL Holiday Bundle

November 29th, 2012 | Category: Uncategorized

The rumored Mario Kart 7 3DS XL bundle slated to come out this holiday season is a real thing, as Nintendo recently confirmed in a recent press release.

Many of the things the rumor mentioned are true: The bundle will include a blue 3DS XL with Mario Kart 7 already installed and it will have a MSRP of $200. The only thing the rumor didn’t specify was an exact release date, but Nintendo has cleared that up by saying the bundle will be available beginning December 2.

Only 4,000 Copies of the Hyrule Historia Limited Edition Will Be Printed

November 28th, 2012 | Category: Uncategorized

Despite its relatively minor cosmetic differences, the collector’s edition of Hyrule Historia will cost twice as much as the standard edition. The reason for the major price discrepancy? Publisher Dark Horse Books will only be printing 4,000 copies of the collector’s edition, making them actual collectibles.

Both the standard and collector’s editions of the Zelda encyclopedia will be out early next year.

I’m starting to suspect that they’re not as limited as they say they are.
