This Week in Games: “It’s Like Bowling” Edition

May 31st, 2015 | Category: Uncategorized

Lord of Magna: Maiden Heaven is the only game coming out this week.

As this week’s title suggests, the game is kind of like bowling. You know, if the pins were people, the balls were weapons and the overweight “athletes” in bright clothes were anime girls… in bright clothes.

Yeah, just like bowling.

Player Two in Splatoon’s Battle Dojo Can Also Have Motion Controls

May 30th, 2015 | Category: Uncategorized

Wii U Pro Controller Wii Remote Plus Splatoon

Splatoon‘s Battle Dojo mode lets two players go head-to-head locally, with one player playing on the GamePad and the other using the TV and a Wii U Pro Controller.

However, as the Squid Research Lab revealed, by strapping a Wii Remote Plus to the Pro Controller (or Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro), it’s possible for both players to use motion controls.

“On the controller selection screen for Battle Dojo, press and hold down on the +Control Pad, press and hold B, and then press ZR and ZL.

It seems a Wii Remote Plus is necessary to perform this incredible feat. This technique also appears to be possible when using a Classic Controller or Classic Controller Pro! When using a Wii U Pro Controller, first press ZL and ZR to select that as your controller, and then press the 2 Button on the Wii Remote Plus to activate it.”

Rival Turf! is out today. Sure, the game was fairly mediocre, but, boy, was its box art a time capsule for the early ’90s.

Truck Delivering Splatoon Stolen En Route to UK Retailer

May 27th, 2015 | Category: Uncategorized

Splatoon EU Special Edition

U.K. retailer GAME‘s stock of Splatoon was stolen after the truck that was supposed to deliver the game was stolen.

Among the items lost in the robbery was the special edition version of the game, which was Europeans’ only way of getting the Inkling Squid amiibo.

GAME issued an apology to those affected and said that there is no way for them to replace the stolen special editions. However, they are offering to change existing orders over to the standard version of the game at a discount. Those with the bundle that included the Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl amiibo will still receive their figures.

Splatoon Originally Starred Ink-Shooting Tofu

May 23rd, 2015 | Category: Uncategorized

Splatoon Tofu

In the latest “Iwata Asks,” the Splatoon team talk about the many changes the game went through before becoming the game we know today.

Surprisingly, the idea behind the game’s Turf War mode was one of the earliest parts of the game to come into existence, but back in its concept days, it originally featured ink-shooting chunks of tofu instead of transforming squid people.

As development went on, the team tried using rabbits as the main characters.

“Rabbits are white to begin with, so it would be easy to tell if they were inked,” Splatoon art director Seita Inoue said. “They’ve got long ears that would move when they did, so you could see them moving and when viewed from above, it would be easy to tell which direction they were facing by the direction of the ears.”

However, when the team realized that rabbits shooting ink didn’t really make much sense, they came up with the idea of using squids. It was then that things started to click into place and more gameplay elements, like being able to use ink to hide and climb up walls, came about.

The developers go on to share even more stories of the various revisions made to the characters and game in the full discussion.
