Nintendo Greatly Reducing Wii U Production for This Fiscal Year

April 28th, 2016 | Category: Uncategorized

Wii U Unit Reduction Slide

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima announced plans to taper the production of Wii U hardware for this fiscal year. The company expects to ship only 800,000 new Wii U units by the end of March 2017. During the previous fiscal year, they expected to ship 3.4 million units.

The large drop-off is due in part to the release of the company’s next platform, codenamed “NX,” which is slated to launch worldwide in March.

Nintendo Sees Steep Drop in Profits During This Fiscal Year

April 27th, 2016 | Category: Uncategorized

It is a very down year for Nintendo. The company recently released their financial results for the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2016 and while operating income is up, sales and profits are down a considerable amount compared to the last fiscal year.

Nintendo posted an operating income of ¥32.9 billion (≈$295.1 million), a 32.7 percent increase from 2015, but saw heavy losses in ordinary income, only putting up ¥24.8 billion (≈$222.6 million), a 59.2 percent decrease.

Net sales came in at ¥504.4 billion (≈$4.5 billion). While it was not a massive loss compared to last year’s figures, it was still a sizable 8.2 percent drop.

The biggest blow came in regards to profit. The company posted ¥16.5 billion (≈$148 million), which is a staggering 60.6 percent drop from the previous year.

Nintendo attributes the poor numbers to a lack of major releases to boost hardware sales. The company cites last year’s releases Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS as being big contributors to 2015’s strong performance.

As for this year, Nintendo is looking to keep themselves going with releases like Pokémon Sun and Moon, along with Kirby: Planet Robobot and Metroid: Federation Force.

Nintendo Working on Mobile Apps Based on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem

April 27th, 2016 | Category: Uncategorized

This fall, Nintendo plans to release their next two mobile apps, which will make use of the Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing franchises.

The mobile Fire Emblem aims to stick with its traditional role-playing strategy formula, but also be more accessible than previous entries on handhelds and consoles. As for the mobile Animal Crossing game, Nintendo plans to make it so that the app will be able to connect with Animal Crossing games on Nintendo systems.

Both games take very different approaches to mobile than their forerunner Miitomo, something Nintendo acknowledges, promising more game elements and content that ties into their hardware business.

Nintendo will announce more details on the games as they get closer to launch.
