Confusion and anger broke out among the fighting game community yesterday after Shoryuken announced that Super Smash Bros. Melee would not be streamed at this year’s Evolution fighting game tournament due to the fact that the tournament organizers did not have permission from Nintendo.

The decision to shut down the stream is likely due to Nintendo’s recent focus on protecting their IPs, ensuring their content is “shared across social media channels in an appropriate and safe way.” Earlier this year, the company began filing “content ID matches” on YouTube.

In response to the announcement, fans took to Nintendo’s social media outlets pleading the company to reconsider, using the tags #FreeMelee and #MeleeStream4Evo.

It appears to have worked, as Nintendo has reversed their decision. Super Smash Bros. Melee will be streamed and the Evo tournament schedule will go on as originally planned.
