Nintendo will begin phasing out the 3DS XL in Japan. The official 3DS hardware page was recently updated with messages confirming production on all currently available 3DS XL models will end soon.
However, it appears that special edition models, like the Monster Hunter 4 and Yo-Kai Watch ones may still be available.
The decision to stop making the XL is likely to encourage sales of the New 3DS XL. With the New 3DS line not out in North America, it’s currently unknown whether this production change will affect availability of the XL in the region.

It’s sort of a lame duck period for the 3DS right now. With the announcement of the New 3DS, Nintendo has made it so there isn’t much of a reason to pick up a current 3DS/3DS XL.
Regardless, the company announced four new limited edition 3DS XLs that will launch in North America over the course of the next few months.
After that, on October 10, a NES-styled 3DS XL will launch exclusively at GameStop.
Also coming exclusively to GameStop is the Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth 3DS XL. It will come out on November 25. Like the Super Smash Bros. XL, it will not come with a copy of the game.No comments
If you don’t mind your handheld being not new, they’re a pretty good deal at $135 ($150 for the limited editions). Plus, they come with all the accessories packaged with a new XL and Nintendo’s guarantee as an Authentic Nintendo Refurbished Product.
The Nintendo 3DS XL is available as an Authentic Nintendo Refurbished Product only from Nintendo, and it comes with our standard one year warranty. Although it may have minor cosmetic blemishes, it is guaranteed to be fully functional. We think you will find the standards for Authentic Nintendo Refurbished Products are VERY high.

Managing the camera in the 3DS Monster Hunter games can be a pain, due in part to the handheld’s lack of a second circle pad.
Nintendo’s Circle Pad Pro fixes this problem, allowing players to move the camera with the extra pad, but it still requires players to stop attacking in order to readjust the camera.
This is where Hori’s new Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate grip comes in. It moves the second circle pad to the where the left shoulder button should be, allowing players to control the camera and run around with just their left hand. In doing so, it frees up the right hand to focus on attacking.
Hori’s grip still has the additional shoulder buttons found on the Circle Pad Pro. ZR is in the same spot in the upper right, but ZL has been moved towards the base of the grip where it can be hit with the middle finger.
Admittedly, it seems like it’d make the 3DS/XL harder to hold, but anything’s better than the dreaded claw grip from Monster Hunter‘s PSP days.

We knew Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth was getting a special edition 3DS XL (LL) in Japan, but we haven’t seen what it looked like. Until now, that is.
Atlus released the first images of the handheld that will be bundled with Persona Q when it launches on June 5. It will cost ¥25,380 (≈$251).
The front is styled after Elizabeth from Persona 3‘s book Le Grimoire du Coeur. It also features the phrase “La personnalité change le monde,” which roughly translates to ” the personality changes the world.”
On the other side, the handheld has the entire cast of Persona Q.

For 500 Coins, Club Nintendo members can get an Animal Crossing-themed pouch for the 3DS XL. Of course, that isn’t to say it also couldn’t be used to hold a 3DS, DSi or DS.
The pouches measure 8.25 x 5 inches, feature little icons from the series and come in two colors: Pink and Light Blue.No comments
Nintendo announced on Twitter that the special edition Yoshi 3DS XL is indeed coming to North America later this month.
It was expected that the handheld would head stateside after flyers from Toys R Us and Target leaked last Saturday.
The special edition 3DS XL will launch alongside Yoshi’s New Island on March 14.

Leaked flyers from Toys R Us and Target suggest that Nintendo will release the special edition Yoshi 3DS XL in North America. However, the company hasn’t confirmed its release.
The handheld is launching alongside Yoshi’s New Island in Europe and Australia, but unlike most special editions, it won’t come bundled with a game.
Yoshi’s New Island comes out on March 14 in North America and Europe and March 15 in Australia. No comments
I have to believe the Japanese 3DS market is just entirely comprised of Monster Hunter and special edition 3DS models at this point.
Joining the massive tower of different 3DS units is the special edition 3DS XL for Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call, which launches alongside the game itself on April 24 in Japan.
