Nintendo Rewarding Hackers Up to $20,000 to Find 3DS System Vulnerabilities

Category: Uncategorized

Nintendo is looking to enlist hackers in discovering exploits and other vulnerabilities in 3DS hardware. The company recently set up a bug bounty program on the vulnerability coordination platform HackerOne.

They are offering to pay between $100 and $20,000 to the first person that formally issues a report on each new vulnerability. The amount rewarded will vary depending on the importance of the information and the reports ability to meet certain criteria.

From Nintendo’s HackerOne policy page:

“A report is evaluated to be high quality if you show that the vulnerability is exploitable by providing a proof of concept (functional exploit code is even better). If you don’t yet have a proof of concept, or functional exploit code, we still encourage you to report to us sooner rather than later such that you do not to lose the opportunity to become the first reporter; you can then submit a proof of concept or functional exploit code later (within three (3) weeks of the initial report) and it will be considered to be a part of the report.

“The reward will be paid after the reported vulnerability has been fixed by Nintendo, but no later than four (4) months after Nintendo has confirmed the reported vulnerability.”

Nintendo in only looking for information on vulnerabilities for 3DS hardware and not other Nintendo platforms or their network services.

Removed EB Games Accessory Listing Points Towards Nintendo Switch Supporting USB-C

Category: Uncategorized

switch-usb-c-third-party

Listings for third-party Nintendo Switch accessories briefly appeared on EBGames’ Australian site before being quickly taken down. Among them, was a USB-A to USB-C charging cable, which suggests that Nintendo may be doing away with proprietary charging plugs for their new console. However, Nintendo has not confirmed anything.

USB-C plugs are relatively new, only appearing on devices made after 2014. The plug itself is a slightly bigger than a micro USB plug, but it has the benefit of being completely reversible, with either side facing up when inserted into a device.

Nintendo will air a presentation to discuss the Switch’s launch, price and games later this year on January 12.
