If you’ve been diving into the classics library on your Switch, we’ve got some excellent news for you. The Nintendo Switch Online app has received a significant update (version 3.0.0, so make sure you download it!), and it’s packing a couple of features that are genuine game-changers.
Remap and Resolve
First up, and this is a big one: universal button remapping is finally here. Tired of the default control scheme in your favorite NES, SNES, or N64 title? Now you can customize those inputs to your heart’s content. This follows the same fantastic feature that was added to the SNES app not long ago, and it’s fantastic to see it rolled out across the entire classics platform. No more struggling with awkward layouts—make every game play your way.
Secondly, handheld mode players get a massive win: a native 1080p resolution boost. That’s right, when you’re playing undocked, your retro games will now look sharper and cleaner than ever before on the Switch’s screen. It’s a subtle but hugely appreciated upgrade that makes these classics feel right at home on modern hardware.
The Nice-to-Have Tweaks
Beyond the two major features, the update includes a few cool, if less flashy, additions:
- A Rebrand: The app has been formally christened with the “Nintendo Classics” name, solidifying its identity as the home for your nostalgic fixes.
- A New Boot Sound: The app now starts up with the satisfying coin sound from the Mario Advance series. Even cooler, the original startup screen appears with a subtle GameCube-like stick tilt animation—a neat little nod to the past.
New Games Are Here, But Region-Locked
On the content front, there are new games to check out, though availability depends on your region.
Our friends in Japan just received the cult-classic RPG Magical Vacation on the Game Boy Advance app. For those of us in North America and Europe, the N64 app has been updated with the spooky first-person shooter Forsaken.
So, what are you waiting for? Download that update and start remapping those buttons! What classic will you be replaying with a fresh control scheme? Let us know in the comments.
