Happy Pokémon Day! As expected, The Pokémon Company pulled out all the stops for the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and the biggest news of the February 2026 Pokémon Presents was the official reveal of Generation X. Say hello to Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves .
Scheduled for a 2027 release, these brand-new mainline titles will be launching exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2, officially marking the series’ transition to Nintendo’s next-generation hardware . This means the original Switch won’t be able to run the new adventures, which are being built from the ground up for the more powerful system.
The debut trailer gave us a breathtaking look at a new, unnamed region. It appears to be a sprawling, tropical archipelago featuring “beautiful windswept islands and a vast ocean with glittering waves” . Early glimpses show dense jungles, volcanic caves, futuristic resorts, and what looks to be a first for the mainline series: genuine underwater exploration .
Meet the New Starters: Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua

Of course, a new generation means new partner Pokémon. The trailer introduced us to the three adorable starters we’ll be choosing from in 2027 :
- Browt (Grass-type): The Bean Chick Pokémon. This lively and slightly clumsy little bird runs around energetically, photosynthesizing with the leaves on its brow.
- Pombon (Fire-type): The Puppy Pokémon. With a heat-generating organ in its chest, this guileless and friendly pup is ready to warm your heart.
- Gecqua (Water-type): The Water Gecko Pokémon. This highly intelligent gecko launches springy balls of water from its tail and maneuvers with a shrewd, air-filled attitude.
With the technical criticisms of Scarlet and Violet fresh in everyone’s minds, the visual leap shown in the Winds and Waves trailer is a promising sign. It looks like Game Freak is using the extra time and new hardware to deliver the truly polished, expansive Pokémon world fans have been dreaming of . We’ll be waiting until 2027, but if this first look is anything to go by, it will be worth it.
