A while back, LEGO released the Pokémon Kanto Region Badge Collection to celebrate Pokémon’s 30th anniversary — but there was a catch. Set 40892 was only available as a gift with purchase on the most expensive sets, which meant a lot of people missed out entirely.

LEGO has now released the official build instructions as a free 80-page PDF, and that changes things considerably.

The set contains all eight Kanto gym badges — Boulder, Cascade, Thunder, Rainbow, Soul, Marsh, Volcano, and Earth — displayed in a brick-built box with a Poké Ball-inspired clasp. It needs 312 pieces in total, and the PDF lists every single one of them with part codes. That means you can head to LEGO’s Pick-a-Brick section and order exactly what you need.

It’s a bit of a project, and sourcing 312 specific pieces isn’t going to be free, but if you’re a Pokémon fan with a decent brick collection already, you might be surprised how many parts you already have.

This is the kind of thing LEGO does every now and then — releasing instructions for sets that were otherwise limited — and it’s a genuinely nice move. The finished result looks great on a shelf, and the Poké Ball clasp detail is inspired.
