Look, no one is surprised, but it’s still worth saying out loud: the Super Mario Galaxy movie has absolutely demolished the 2026 box office.
After just a few weeks in cinemas, it’s already crossed $629 million globally — $308 million of that from North America alone. That puts it comfortably ahead of the previous frontrunner, Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi adaptation Project Hail Mary, which had crossed the $500 million mark. Solid movie. Didn’t stand a chance.
The original Mario movie was a phenomenon in 2023, so the appetite for a sequel was always going to be huge. Still, the speed at which this one has climbed is remarkable. It’s not even close to the end of its theatrical run yet.
It’d be interesting to know how many people going to see this film have never played a Mario game. The animated films have done something clever — they’ve turned Nintendo properties into genuinely mainstream entertainment events, the kind of thing families plan a whole Saturday around.
Anyway. A staggering number. Nintendo continues to print money. All is well.
