Final Fantasy XIV Is Actually Coming to Switch 2 — Here’s the Catch

It finally happened. After years of "it'd be technically difficult" and collective community shrugging, Square Enix took the stage at FFXIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim today and made it official: Final Fantasy XIV is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026.

Take a moment. Breathe it in.

For a lot of people, this is genuinely a big deal. FFXIV has been one of the most beloved MMOs of the past decade, and the idea of being able to play it properly on a handheld — in bed, on the sofa, wherever — has been a dream for a very long time. The Switch 2 version will have full cross-progression with your existing account on PC, PlayStation, or Xbox, so you're not starting from scratch. Your character, your gear, your housing nightmare — it all carries over. That's the good news.

Now, here's where it gets a bit spicy.

Nintendo's platform requirements mean the Switch 2 version needs its own separate subscription. Yes, even if you already pay monthly to play on PC or PS5. You can't just use your existing sub. However — and this is the part that softens the blow somewhat — if you're already an active subscriber on another platform, you'll get 50% off the Switch 2 subscription. So it stings less, but it still stings. No Nintendo Switch Online subscription is required on top of that, which is at least one less hoop to jump through.

Whether this is a dealbreaker depends entirely on how much you want to play FFXIV on the go. If you're a lapsed player thinking about dipping back in via Switch 2, it's probably fine — the cost is roughly halved, and playing an MMO handheld is a legitimately different and appealing experience. If you're an existing hardcore player who already subs on multiple platforms, it's a harder sell.

And speaking of reasons to resub — Square Enix also announced Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold, the sixth expansion, coming in January 2027. It kicks off a brand new story arc called the Godless Realms Saga, which is a delightfully dramatic name. Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida also revealed a pretty significant battle system overhaul coming with Evercold: a split between Reborn Mode, which preserves the current combat feel, and Evolved Mode, which pushes further into distinct job identity. That's a massive undertaking for a live game with this many players, and it'll be fascinating to see how the community responds.

Oh, and there's an Evangelion collaboration in the works too, because of course there is.

The Switch 2 launch in August will include an early access period free for all players before the full release. Exact dates for that window haven't been confirmed yet.

It's a good day to be a Final Fantasy fan, subscription caveats and all.
